Style Tips From Stacy London

In a recent survey, Bali asked American women who the most beautiful woman in their lives is. Not surprisingly, the most popular answer was “my mother.” My bet is these votes were based on the beautiful lives moms lead – their endless giving and their inner strength and beauty. Because as we all know, moms put themselves at the end of the priority list, even when it comes to how they look.

While the kids look great, moms everywhere are running around in baggy sweats and sneakers. And the longer you dress that way, the harder it is to find a more appropriate everyday style.

Bali encourages women – and moms particularly – to reflect on their inner and outer beauty. Simple steps can enhance the beautiful life that you live. I, for one, think you deserve to be beautiful on the inside and reflect that beauty on the outside. So many women translate comfortable into sloppy. WRONG! Here are some quick, easy tips to help banish dowdiness and insert beauty and style into your busy life.

Wear clothes that fit you well. It doesn’t matter how expensive or inexpensive they are – clothes only look good when they fit you well. And that’s everything from a good pair of jeans to a cotton t-shirt.

Lay the right foundation. No more bunchy cotton underwear or bras that don’t fit! (Yes, fit applies to bras and undies as well!) Pick pretty panties with a smooth silhouette and a bra that’s, yes, comfortable, but also gives you great shape underneath your clothes. Try the new Passion for Comfort Bra from Bali.

Pick out clothes the night before. Choosing your outfit that you want to wear the night before helps you avoid searching through the closet in the morning rush, and throwing on whatever you grab first.

Color coordinate your closet. While it may take a little time investment up front, you don’t want to be frantically searching for your favorite blue blouse or black pants when you’re pinched for time.

Delight in dresses. Dresses are a huge trend this spring both for day- and evening-wear. I love them because they are so easy. One piece, and you have an outfit. And there are so many options out there in flattering cuts (and always make sure you have the right bra). Regardless of your curves underneath, there’s a dress shape that’ll work for you:

Add a little sparkle. To quickly add a little sophistication to any outfit, add a little shine. Pair some gold sandals with a pair of jeans or try a cropped linen-blend jacket with sheen. That little bit of shine will easily add oomph to any outfit. And still comfortable!

Moms feel so overwhelmed that they forget that they have options when it comes to dressing. It shouldn’t just be a question of “is this clean?” You don’t have to be at the forefront of style, but don’t forget the impact and value of your own appearance. That’s not selfishness -- that’s just what it means to be a great mom. It’s a legacy worth teaching your children. So get out there and Live Beautifully!

Instead of this, why not that?

Instead of sneakers, why not flats? There are other comfortable shoes in the world besides sneakers. Flats continue to be as popular this spring as they have been for the last couple of seasons, so there are lots of options to choose from. Find a pair that’s comfortable and stylish.

Instead of a skirt, why not walking shorts? This spring, walking shorts have really taken the place of the skirt. And that does not mean shorts all the way to the top of your thigh. You’d be crazy, in most cases, to do that. But shorts to the knee, in a nice straight leg with a slit pocket, are great. Make sure they fit well in the tush, hips, and thigh to offer a chic and casual day look.

Instead of sweatpants and flip flops, why not a walking short with a low-wedge sandal? If you are one of those moms that wear sweatpants and rubber flip flops for comfort, try walking shorts with a low-wedge sandal. If you claim that you can’t wear heels because they are uncomfortable or you’re running around, forgo the wooden heel and try a rattan, suede, or rubber wedge that will actually help cushion your foot.

Instead of a sweatshirt, why not a thin knit cardigan? Select one in a beautiful color. Even if you put it on top of a T-shirt, it’s much more flattering.

Instead of a bulky blouse, why not a three-quarter sleeve shirt? Don’t wear big shirts because you think you have big arms? The most universally flattering sleeve is three quarter length. It covers the top of the arm – which is the part of the arm that most women feel self-conscious about – and at the same time add a feminine, flattering touch.

Instead of a skinny jean, why not a wide leg trouser? The skinny jean is really hard to wear. But the wide leg is back for spring in a big way, and it’s far more flattering for most women.
